Virtual Author & Illustrator Visits
In Year 6 we were extrememly lucky to be visited by Polly Ho-Yen, the talented author of our class Literacy text 'Boy in the Tower'. The children each wrote questions for Polly and she shared some invaluable tips for the children about the way she works. It was great for Polly to share her idea doodle with the children. We will definitely be trying some of our own. She also explained the importance of giving quality time to edit and improve writing with others who can share their thoughts, what they love about the piece of work and how you might try to change it. Polly left us with the tag line of 'Fill your head with reading' as a tip to help or young writers.
We were very fortunate to work with a local Cornish book shop-Stories By The Sea-to organise these visits with Joseph Coelho, Fiona Lumbers and Sita Brahmachari. The children wrote and video recorded themselves asking questions and then the authors and illustrators talked about their work: their ideas and inspirations, the writing and editing process and responded to the children's questions.
It was fantastic and the children got a really clear insight into how books are created, the pictures made and the life of an author and illustrator.
In early January 2022, we were lucky enough to be joined by Rebecca Cobb - illustrator of 'The Everywhere Bear' and author of many books herself including, 'The Something' and 'The Day War Came.' She read 'The Everywhere Bear' to Mrs Penrose's Reception class and then answered some questions that the children had prepared.
One interesting answer from Rebecca was that she actually draws with sticks she finds; she cuts off the end in a diagonal line and then uses special ink to create her pieces of artwork - the children loved this and immediately started 'stick sketches' of their own.
