School Leadership Team

As school leaders, we work together to strategically lead and manage our happy school. We focus on leading, monitoring and developing teaching and learning so that the children have the very best tools to enable them to succeed in life, on a community, national and global scale.

We set the Trust and school's direction and implement the strategies to support it and make sure that St. Newlyn East Learning Academy's values and ethos are clear and that everyone contributes towards it.

We empower our whole team to grow by encouraging them to take on more responsibilities and ensure that they have access to, Trust wide, high quality CPD. This creates a more adaptable team that can work collectively to achieve our goals.

Mr Andy Watkins

Headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead

This is my third post within Kernow Learning, having previously worked at Charlestown and as Acting Headteacher of St. Column Major. Prior to this, I have worked in six different schools and taught in a range of years, including six years as a year 6 teacher.

Reading is one area of the curriculum that I love along with PE (I used to be able to play a little too!). Away from school, I am lucky to have two children - aged six and two who keep me busy. I have also been happily married for thirteen years. We also have a dog - Dexter - a Springer Spaniel who never rests!

I am thrilled and honoured to be the Headteacher of St. Newlyn East - the team we have here are professional, passionate and welcoming. We are aiming to be the best we can be every day, and I know that the school can become a beacon of excellence in Cornwall.

Mrs Laura Massabò

Assistant Head / Year 1 Teacher

I have worked at St Newlyn East Learning Academy for seven years now and I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful school community.

As well as being Assistant Head, I teach Year 1 and I am a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) for Phonics. Within this role I support other schools with teaching early reading and phonics as part of the Kernow English Hub. As well as English, I love teaching Modern Foreign Languages.

When I’m not at school I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, especially when the weather is sunny and we can have walks on the beach or in the beautiful Cornish countryside! When I get the chance in the school holidays I also like to visit Italy and Sardinia, where my husband and I have lots of family.

It is a real privilege to now be part of the SLT at St. Newlyn East and I am looking forward to continuing to drive the school forward in terms of outstanding teaching and learning.

Mrs Tanya Banks

Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO)

Mrs Angela Datlen

School Administrator

Hello,
I am Mrs Datlen (Angela) and I have worked at St Newlyn East Learning Academy since September 2021 as School Administrator.
I very much enjoy working at this lovely school and the best part is meeting and greeting the parents, children and staff each day from the friendly front office.
When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my two young children and my husband and going on lots of adventures with them.

Mrs Jessica Penrose

Foundation Class

Hi, I'm Mrs Penrose and I teach Foundation.

I've always been so passionate about the Early Years, every day is so different and you get to be so creative. The children learn so much in this year but it's always really fun and playful. I love how enthusiastic the children are about school and how much energy they have.

Music is also a real passion of mine and I try to incorporate music and singing into every day, if not every lesson! I usually run a school choir and we sing together as a school, every week! Singing is great for our bodies and our minds!

I've always lived in Cornwall so when I'm not at school I love taking long walks by the coast with my husband and my dog Wilbur.

St Newlyn East is an amazing school and like one big family. I love it here!

Mrs Sarah Boden

Mrs Laura Massabò

Year 1 Teacher

I have worked at St Newlyn East Learning Academy for seven years now and I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful school community.

I adore teaching Year 1 and witnessing the journey that the children take from Early Years to Key Stage 1, as they gain confidence and independence. It really is the best job in the world!

When I’m not at school I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, especially when the weather is sunny and we can have walks on the beach or in the beautiful Cornish countryside! When I get the chance in the school holidays I also like to visit Italy and Sardinia, where my husband and I have lots of family.

Mrs Hayley Richards

Year 1 Higher Level Teaching Assistant

My name is Mrs Richards and I have worked in Year 1 with Mrs Massabò for 5 years. I love it!

I have a passion for all things 'Dance' and even run dance classes at the school, including Ballet and Tap. I live with my two daughters Ella and Lola, our dog Frankie and our cat Polly. We have recently moved into our new house and we're having lots of fun getting it looking just the way we'd like it! On the weekends I like to take Frank on lovely long walks on our local beach, Porth.

Mrs Vicki Stavrou

Year 2 Teacher

Hello I’m Mrs. Stavrou and I feel privileged to teach Year 2 and continue their learning journey in KS1, whilst getting them prepared for KS2. This is my fourth year working at St. Newlyn East Learning Academy and I’m very lucky to be part of a unique and special team.

I am also the Design & Technology and Science lead for the school. As a graduate of psychology, I’m interested in the scientific study of behaviour, and I love the inquisitiveness that both the subjects bring out in children.

Out of school, I love going on long walks and spending time exploring Cornwall’s gorgeous beaches with my husband and two children. One of our favourite pass times is looking for sea glass, and we have built up quite a generous collection! I have a passion for reading, the theatre and getting into the latest box set on Netflix. In the summer time, you might spot me trying to surf-something I’m persevering with.

Mrs Jo Bentley

Year 2 Teaching Assistant

Hi, my name is Ms Bentley, I have worked within the trust for 6 years. I gained a degree in Teaching and Learning 2 years ago and hope to complete the final year to become a teacher in the near future. I am extremely proud to work at St. Newlyn East School and love my role as support teacher within Year 2.

I have lived in Newquay for 25 years and am so grateful to live by the sea and call Cornwall my home. My home itself is very lively, I have 3 children, Rhys 16, Calum 15 and Maisie who is 9. We spend our spare time walking Ralph, our Westie-Poo, on the beach or at the local woods. I absolutely love reading and spend most evenings at home relaxing with my family and a good book.

Miss Lucy Charnley

Year 3 Teacher

Hi everyone, my name is Miss Charnley. Having recently completed my teacher training with Exeter University within Kernow Learning schools, this year will be my first year of teaching. I am so happy to be a part of the St Newlyn East Learning Academy community and can’t wait for the year ahead as the year 3 class teacher. Maths is a particular area of the curriculum that I love to teach and I strive to make all learning as engaging and fun as possible for children.

Outside school, I like to keep active by rowing, sea swimming all year round and walking Cornwall’s beautiful coast path.

Mrs Julie Phillips

Year 3 Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Mrs Jo Jones

Year 4 Teacher

In the past, I have taught in various schools across Cornwall. I am now in my 10th Year working within Kernow Learning. St Newlyn East is such a special place to work. I have taught many children here and lots have kept in touch by visiting school long after they have left- collecting their younger brothers and sisters!
I lived in Canada for several years with my family and returned to Cornwall to teach.

I have two grown up children. Hannah who has not long completed her doctorate and Lewis who has completed his degree in anthropology. They both live together in London with Hannah's Pomeranian 'Bailey'.

I attended art college in Liverpool. Now I look after the Art curriculum in school as well as supporting pastorally.

When not in the classroom, I enjoy gardening or visiting Hannah and Lewis in London. I also like to go to the cinema or theatre.

Mrs Carol Carter

Year 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Mr James Iliffe

Year 5 Teacher

My name is Mr Iliffe and I am the Year 3 teacher. I have worked in several different schools in my career and taught in many different year groups. I am the Math and Computing lead which are both subjects that I am very passionate about.

I have lived in Cornwall for many years; the best thing is the sea and everything it has to offer. I love surfing, kayaking, snorkelling and SUPing - I would class myself as a water baby. My other passions are participating in triathlons, rugby and travelling. I still compete in triathlons which is a combination of swimming, cycling and running. My passion for travelling has taken me all over the world surfing whilst having an adventure! I like to share my knowledge of the world within my teaching.

Mrs Jenny Reeves

Year 5 Teaching Assistant

Hi, I'm Mrs Reeves.

I started helping as a volunteer at our school when my son joined in reception class. He is now 18 years old and studying physics at the University of Manchester. I honestly believe his time at our school prepared him, as he was encouraged and challenged all through his time here.
I currently work with Year 5, but have been lucky enough to work with all year groups and I especially enjoy working one to one with children.

Mr Andrew McKim

Year 5 Teaching Assistant

I have now worked at the school for just over two years. I can honestly say it is the most rewarding role I have ever undertaken. I take great inspiration from supporting the children to develop their skills, knowledge and abilities to over overcome their challenges and succeed.

Outside of school, my pride and joy are my three children. I have a daughter at university studying psychology. I have two boys, which fill me with pride. Football, the beach and gaming preoccupies our time. Any spare time I spend searching for record – have had a passion for this since I was 13 and led to me DJing in Warrington and Manchester.

Mr Tom Shepherd

Year 6 Teacher

Hello everyone. I am currently the year 6 class teacher and in my 3rd year of teaching at St Newlyn East. I was fortunate enough to complete my teacher training at St Newlyn East under the guide of our Year 1 Teacher in 2015 before returning as a fully qualified teacher a couple of years later. During my time away, I was still working within Kernow Learning at The Bishops CofE Learning Academy. Having taught across most year groups, I have found it particularly rewarding teaching upper Key Stage 2 and helping prepare children for secondary school and later life. In school I oversee PE, and alongside Mrs Penrose, help to oversee humanities.

When not in the classroom, I have a number of other passions that are mainly sports. I am often found on a football pitch during the winter and then taking advantage of our wonderful coastline attempting to surf in the summer.

Mrs Kim Thompson

Year 6 Higher Level Teaching Assistant

I’ve lived in the village for more than 30 years and worked at SNELA for almost 20 years. I qualified as a HLTA in 2007 and in 2014 I gained a BA Hons. in Professional Practice (Education). I’ve worked across all key stages during my time at SNELA but for the last 7 years have been based in Years 5 & 6. I’ve now got to the stage where children who used to be in my classes are now bringing their own children to our school, eek!
