Safeguarding at St Newlyn East Learning Academy
- protecting children from maltreatment;
- preventing impairment of children's health or development;
- ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care;
- taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Visitors
All visitors must complete a Visitors Pack before coming into school. On entry to the school all visitors are asked to provide ID. They will be handed our safeguarding information leaflet to read before they sign in. Visitors to the school are not allowed to use mobile phones, cameras or other devices with camera facilities in school.
There are posters with photographs of the Safeguarding Team placed around school so if visitors have any safeguarding concerns, they are able to identify who to report their concerns to. One of the administrators will always show visitors where the safeguarding office is and, where possible, introduce them to the headteacher and/or DDSLs.
The DSL should:
• work with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure safeguarding is at the heart of the school ethos and that all staff are supported in knowing how to recognise and respond to potential concerns.
• liaise with the head teacher or principal to keep them informed of any safeguarding of issues especially ongoing enquiries and police investigations
• as required, liaise with the local authority case manager or the designated officer at the local authority if a concern has arisen regarding a member of staff
• liaise with staff on matters of safety and safeguarding and when deciding whether to make a referral by liaising with relevant agencies
• act as a source of support, advice and expertise for staff.
Safeguarding Trainers
Emma French delivers Introduction to Child Protection and Safeguarding training to all staff in school and all staff attend a yearly update training. From September 2021, this 'Tier 2' training will be completed in staggered groups throughout the year.
Reporting Concerns
It is the responsibility of all staff at St. Newlyn East, whatever their role, to report any concerns they may have about a student with regard to child protection and safeguarding. We use the electronic recording system “My Concern” to log all child protection and safeguarding concerns. Staff have their own individual username and password to “My Concern”. The safeguarding team are able to then track Child protection and Safeguarding concerns easily as it keeps a chronology for each child of reports and actions taken. The safeguarding team meet formally once a week to discuss concerns and daily for check-ins about concerns that may have arisen during the day.
The DSL and all the deputies receive electronic notifications when a concern is added to the system and are able to look though the chronologies and can assign actions to staff if required. We believe this is a very effective tool in collating and monitoring child protection and safeguarding.
Any concerns about staff should be reported direct to the Headteacher or the Chair of Governors (Michelle Hague), in line with the schools ‘Whistleblowing Policy’.

St Newlyn East Learning Academy is an Operation Encompass School.
Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools, prior to the start of the next school day, when a child or young person has exposed to, or involved in, any domestic incident.
Operation Encompass ensures that a member of the school staff, known as a Key Adult, is trained to allow them to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared in confidence. This enables us to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have been involved in, or exposed to, a domestic abuse incident.
Our Key Adult is Andy Watkins.
