PE and Sport at St. Newlyn East

Our Vision for PE.

PE in Kernow Learning schools is all about developing physical literacy and a love of movement at primary level, with a focus on leadership skills, health and wellbeing. This puts Physical Education at the heart of our educational agenda– ensuring young people are well enough to learn and have developed a range of personal competencies that will help them in the classroom and beyond."  Kernow Learning Trust is keen to address the negative stereotype of PE being all about prowess in sport and rather reposition it to enhance lifelong skills.

Year 5/6 Swimming Gala
It was a privilege to take my first team of competitors to Waterworld on Tuesday 9th November.
The eight children who took part represented the school amazingly well and competed at a high level.
We were competing against many other schools in Cornwall and from within the Trust with the children swimming their favourite strokes in their individual races and then again in a relay at the end.
Ethan won his race with some other second and third place finishes too.
Particular note must go to Freddie who was unbelievable: in my twenty years in Primary school education, I have never seen anyone perform as well has he did! I have recently found out that he is a Nationally recognised swimmer - Freddie dominated all of his races and helped the Year 5/5 boys relay team win their race too.
What an afternoon - well done team.

Cross Country
Congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 Cross country team who took part in their second race of the year. On a bitterly cold Tuesday morning, the children all completed the challenging course with a smile on their face. This was the second out of 4 races and all the children improved on the position that they finished previously! Great job team and we look forward to seeing where you will finish in race 3!
September 2021

It was briliant to return to interschool sport this week! With the addition of our brand new school mini-bus, a team of runners from Year 5 and 6 took part in the first cross-country meeting of the year. The children had  a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of pushing themselves against competitors from other primary schools in the Newquay area. We can't wait for the next event already!

Macron Football Festival
Interschool sport continued with the Macron football festival, it was wonderful to take a team of Year 5 and 6 children to Treviglas where there was skill, hardwork, teamwork, sportsmanship but most of all enjoyment on display from every single player taking part. The values of our school were reflected in the Sports leaders from Treviglas awarding our school the prize of 'Most Sporting Team'. Great job!

Year 4 and 5 Triathlon - 24th May 2022

We have just found out that our amazing cyclists, runners and rowers from year 4 and 5 performed brilliantly at this afternoon's competition. I have been informed that the children gained a second, fourth and third place finish. The children all did amazingly well and showed great Passion whilst Participating. Have a look at the pictures below. Thanks to Mrs. Carter for going and our parent volunteers - Rachel and Tamsyn; we can't do these events without your help - THANKS.
Current Sporting Superstars at School
In our Monday and Friday assemblies, we have a PE and Sport celebration section. Here, the children have the chance to talk about their achievements out of school as well as celebrating the in-school superstars.

Bruno - Huge congratulations to Bruno for his swimming recently where he swam 100metres to gain his blue badge. Great swimming Bruno.

Noah - On Monday 8th November, Noah talked about his heroics in goal at the recent football festival. He saved a penalty and received a medal and a certificate. Well done Noah.

Tretherras Netball Festival
It was great to take a group of Year 6 children to Tretherras to compete against several other primary schools. For the children, it was the first time they had competed in competitive netball. The children all managed to pick up the key responsibilities for the different positons, worked as a team and showed brilliant sportsmanship. They couldn't wait to ask when the next tournament was when it had finsihed.

Football Vs Bishops
On Monday we welcomed Bishops C of E learning academy to SNELA to host the first of a reguarly afternoon of football fixures. Over 40 children took part and improved their football skills in a competitive situation. For some, this was the first time they had experienced being a memeber of a sporting team. It was brilliant to see so many children playing with a smile on their face and encouraging each other! Well done to everyone who took part.

Treviglas Basketall Festival
A huge thanks to the sports leaders from Treviglas who ran this event! For all of the children from St Newlyn East, it was the first time that they had taken part in any sort of organised basketball. The teamwork, encouragement and enjoyment on their faces was fantastic to see. Each game, the squad of 8 children were able to develop and experiment with new basketball skills while chanting and cheering each other on! You were a credit to SNELA.
