Intent, Implementation and Impact – ART Curriculum 2021/2022       

Curriculum Intent: ‘To create inspired and happy learners through an ambitious, engaging enquiry-led curriculum’

Intent

At St Newlyn East Learning Academy, Art is an important element of our broad, balanced, enquiry-led curriculum. Through our Art curriculum, we provide purposeful opportunities to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of artists and aspects of Art and Design.

The aims of Art and Design education are:

ü  To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

ü  To become more proficient in drawing, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

ü  To evaluate and analyse creative woks using the language of art, craft and design.

ü  To know and understand the purpose of great artists, craft makers and designers and what impact they had historically and culturally understanding their specific art forms.

Implementation

Our Art curriculum at St Newlyn East learning Academy is taught with Passion. We allow our children a chance to develop their skills in drawing and painting as well as repeated blocks of learning about artists, textiles, printing, sculpture and collage. We recognise that within classes, there is a wide variety of abilities and so we provide suitable learning opportunities that are matched to the needs of all children. As like other subjects, for the art curriculum we have designed a SEND subject adaptation in order for all children to access the Art curriculum whatever their needs (see link).

Each key stage focuses on different themes to ensure continued interest in the subject as well as acquiring new knowledge. The lessons will develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Children should also know how Art and Design both reflect the shape of our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

We plan our Art and Design teaching and learning based on the progression of skills programme document produced by the subject leader. The long and medium-term plans ensure that there is progression throughout the school and that our children build upon their knowledge learnt in previous years.

Lessons and our school ethos

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at St Newlyn East Academy is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics to ensure a well-structured approach of this creative subject.

The children are taught Art as part of their termly topic work. Areas covered include sculpture, printing based on topic work, nature inspired through Andy Goldsworthy, Margaret Godfrey, Indus art, WW2 propaganda posters, painting, pointillism, Clarise Cliff and the works of the Impressionist artists. The work of famous local, national and international artists is explored to enhance

the children's learning.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of

child initiated and adult directed activities. They have opportunities to learn to:

ü  Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials

ü  Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in

ü  order to manipulate and create different effects.

ü  Use different media and materials to express their own ideas.

ü  Explore colour and use for a particular purpose

ü  Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately.

ü  Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary.

Key stage 1

Pupils are taught:

1. To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.

2. To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas,

experiences and imagination

3. To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern,

texture, line, shape, form and space.

4. About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the

differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making

links to their own work.

Key stage 2

Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use

of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of

different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils are taught:

1. To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and

revisit ideas

2. To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting

and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]

3. About great artists, architects and designers in history. 

At St Newlyn East we aim to meet the needs of all pupils with their diverse experiences – including those with special education needs and disabilities.

Art and Design is provided to all pupils in our school. In the foundation stage, Art is linked to the Early Learning Goals and provided children the opportunity to explore creativity and develop fine motor skills.

Impact

Outcomes:

ü  The enjoyment and development of a Passion for the Art and Design curriculum which will promote creativity, achievement, confidence and inquisitive minds.

ü  Art and Design learning is loved by all staff and pupils across our school – all adults in the class Participate in the lesson to demonstrate the Perseverance needed. Teachers have higher expectations and more quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways.

ü  Children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know and understand the matters, skills and processes specified.

ü  Children improve their enquiry and inquisitiveness about the world around them and their impact through Art and Design on the world.

ü  Children will become more confident in analysing their own pieces of art, whilst also being able to provide an opinion on other pieces too.

ü  Children show competences in improving the resilience and Perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their own work.

ü  Children (through improved Oracy skills) can speak confidently about their art and design learning through their developing skills.
